Hiring a full-time CTO is a significant commitment — often £150k+ plus equity. For companies between founder-led tech and a mature engineering org, that can be premature.

A fractional CTO gives you senior strategic leadership a few days a month: setting the roadmap, overseeing vendors, mentoring the team and representing technology to the board and investors.

It's the right fit when you have real technology decisions to make but not yet enough scale to justify a permanent hire. As you grow, a fractional CTO can also help you recruit their full-time successor.
